Novella Carpenter to talk about Farm City

The ALOUD lecture series at the Los Angeles Public Library's Central Library continues to provide free and timely lectures, and they have just announced a program that will be of interest to Slow Food Los Angeles members and friends.

Novella Carpenter, author of Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer, will speak with Evan Kleiman about life as an urban farmer in Oakland, California and the process of turning a vacant lot into a productive and thriving farm.

When: Thursday, July 23, 2009, at 7:00pm
Where: Central Library Mark Taper Auditorium, Fifth & Flower Streets in downtown Los Angeles
Cost: Free, but reservations are recommended.

Reservations are available via the ALOUD website (http://www.aloudla.org/) or by calling 1.213.228.7025.

Public transportation to the library is available. Those driving may wish to park at the 524 S. Flower St. Garage; the rate is $1 until 8:45pm with Los Angeles Public Library card validation.

David Shane Smith writes songs that are dark and obtuse, yet catchy and personable. The treatments range from folk to electronic samples and rapping. Everything flows through a lens of urban decay and human indifference to create an almost cartoon vision of apocalyptic mythology. His latest work "Cloudpleaser" ia available on Stroboscopic Records.

The incredible Cheri, of Peace Yoga, will be speaking about the benefits of eating raw. We will all get to sample yummy raw foods and juices. Afterwards, take a short walk down the street with us, to Cheri's rooftop garden for a yoga session while the Peace Yoga Drum Circle plays along.

RocknRoll Community Garden is currently working on creating a Communal Urban Farm in the heart of Echo Park. We are dedicated to supporting sustainable, local organic living, providing knowledge and connecting the community. RnR CG also provides weekly seasonal series of live music and lectures, integrating education, activism and community with beauty and art.
